One Concert. Four Choreographers
To Be Found
Chorographer: Kenichi Kasamastsu
Concept: This piece explores notions of searching oneself and discovering community. It’s about expressing the vibrant and intense emotions as people enter and exit our lives throughout our time. There’s the turmoil of our loved ones leaving and the bliss of those who stay forever. This piece was also paired with electronic, industrial music. To emphasize and support this choreography, through lighting I helped to create feeling of both solitude and belonging by shifting between full stage boom washes and sharp spot lights.
Fathers Tears
Choreographer: Roderick George
Concept: This piece displays the euphoria of liberation, joy, and futurism within the African diaspora, with a particular focus of queer Black culture. Paired with intricate house music, this piece delved in to what it means as a black queer person to come into your own is a world so focused on putting you down. When discussing how this piece should look and feel with Roderick our base word was “Ethereal”. To translate this to the stage, I focused on using colors and angles that best showcased the form and movement of the dancers. My goal was not to create a silhouette but rather create an evocative experience for the audience.
Dancing in the Dark
Choreographer: Al Blackstone
Concept: This piece was a large-scale musical theatre style, Fred Astaire tribute. It has four distinct movements, each paired with its own iconic Fred Astaire song. My goal in designing this piece was ensuring all of the movements felt distinguishable yet not disjointed. Lots of big bright looks and high contrast.
